Harry hires Peter to work at his environmental technology startup, the Emily-May Foundation (named after Aunt May and Harry’s mother Emily), so they can pursue his dream of “healing the world”. While overseeing a prison transfer with Peter at The Raft, a vengeful Miles fails to stop the Hunters from capturing Martin Li, who previously killed his father, Jefferson Davis. Investigating Kraven, Peter discovers he is hunting super-powered individuals in search of an “equal”. Having already killed Scorpion, Vulture, Shocker, and Electro, Kraven attempts to capture Black Cat. However, Miles helps her escape to Paris by using the mystical Wand of Watoomb. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 delivers an incredible story about heroes and villains grappling with loneliness.

Standard open-world filler activities are here aplenty, and that’s one area where Spider-Man 2 hasn’t moved with the times or shown ambition at all. Collectibles, photo opportunities, and rather basic street crimes are still here and, despite having a few slightly more interesting quirks this time around, they only very occasionally excite. You’ll regularly be stopping the same getaways with the same few button presses (the button-mashing from previous games is mercifully largely gone) or stopping a break-in by battering the same few goons. The main story took me around 18 hours to complete before I hit 100%, and the subsequent platinum trophy popped up to congratulate my efforts after 27 in total. Despite whatever loftier ambitions the story may have, this is still unapologetically an old-school approach to open-world game design, and nowhere is this displayed more clearly than in its optional quests. 100vip co -Man 2, and to an extent all great Spider-Man stories, tackle themes of adolescence and puberty – a time of uncertainty for even the most normal of teenagers trying to control bodily fluids.
Set Things Right
On PS5 in 2023, Spider-Man 2 at least served as an impressive technical showcase for the hardware, and a blockbuster release in a relatively quiet release schedule. On PC in 2025, without those advantages and in a disappointingly shaky state, it’s much more difficult to recommend. Where the first game starred Peter Parker, and its spin-off starred Miles, this one has both. Story missions choose for you, but often swap seamlessly between them as the action demands.

While Spider-Man 2’s PC release is a good sign, there are no Spider-Man 2 DLC plans in the works. Despite a couple of new tricks up its sleeve, Spider-Man 2’s combat is very familiar – it doesn’t have that new suit smell anymore, but it still feels incredibly comfy to slip back into. The rhythm of precision dodges, the new perfect parries (so you’re not only swerving and striking now), and acrobatic finishers are hugely satisfying, as is chasing high-hit combos to keep the fight as stylish as possible.
Arriving on May 6, otherwise known as Free Comic Book Day, is a prequel story to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. This slice of adventure is set to pit both Peter and Miles against a “new Super Villain whose powers they [don]t understand.” That villain being The Hood. Suits are the key behind unique abilities in terms of both combat and traversal. The sequel is sure to introduce plenty of new Spidey suits for both Peter and Miles, though another layer of depth could be on the way. The new trailer also showed off the new webwings mechanic, as well as the AR tech fitted to Peter’s and Miles’ lenses.

Visual artifacts and a few crashes still remain even after three patches, and the game can feel less than optimized when the frame rate drops on powerful hardware. If you’re willing to wait just a little longer or are the patient and forgiving type, you’ll be rewarded with a safe sequel that can still satisfy fans of the Insomniac-developed games. This title also gets fans primed for the eventual finale what is almost certainly a trilogy. However, this release serves as a warning that Sony and its studios need to do some real work to ensure future game releases are stable from day one, or else they’ll lose the PC audience that is crucial to funding future endeavors. Movement is handled very similarly to the previous games in the series. Using their web shooters, the protagonists can swing between and above buildings while performing aerial acrobatics.
Gameplay
The sequel features two main playable characters – Peter Parker and Miles Morales. This time the superheroes must face two primary villains – Kraven the Hunter and Venom. For those with a hazy memory, there is a brief recap of both Peter and Miles’ stories so far available, which is handy, as this is very much a sequel that weaves in both plotlines and characters from the previous games and accompanying DLC.
Marvel’s New York will naturally be hiding lots of enigmatic and rewarding secrets in its streets and skylines, but one thing which has been given a Super Hero glow-up are the suits you can unlock for Miles and Peter. Enter the addition of Brooklyn and Queens, which nearly doubles the size of the city and offers even more familiar locations that are important to both Spider-Men. Fans can expect to spot places like Brooklyn Visions Academy, Midtown High School, and Aunt May’s house, where Peter is living presently. They won’t just try to out-fight you, but they’ll also aim to out-think you.
As a sequel in a spectacular series, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is both blessed and cursed. Its story of two Spider-Men is a great time and a Spidey fan’s dream to play through as comic book pages are brought to life, elegantly walking the tightrope between light humour and heavier themes. Meanwhile, Insomniac refines a successful formula of combat and web-swinging without revolutionising either in major ways, making them comfy and familiar with just enough new tweaks and abilities to elevate them to fun new heights. The part that feels like it actually needed a radical rethinking is the open world of New York City, which has been made bigger but not better, with an exhausting checklist of mostly repetitious side activities. But it’s safe to call this another thrilling Spider-Man adventure that delivers Insomniac’s best tale yet, and despite its open world falling short, it’s a reliably fun superhero power trip.
